📷 Cell Service Warning
This is critical: cell reception in the Rockbridge area is extremely limited to nonexistent. AT&T, Verizon, and T-Mobile all struggle in the ravines and hollows around the preserve. Before you leave for Rockbridge:
- Download offline maps (Google Maps: tap your profile → Offline maps → Select this area)
- Screenshot or print your driving directions
- Tell someone where you're going and when you expect to return
- Download the ODNR DETOUR app trail maps while you still have signal
Best Times to Visit
Best overall: Weekday mornings, any season. The preserve never gets the extreme crowds of Old Man's Cave, but weekends in October can still fill the small parking lot.
Fall foliage peaks during the second and third weeks of October (roughly October 12–25). Sugar maples and birches change first; oaks and beeches persist into early November.
Winter offers the most solitude. Ice formations can develop on exposed sandstone faces in January–February after sustained freezing temperatures.
Spring wildflowers emerge March through May. The region hosts 300+ wildflower species including trilliums, hepatica, and bloodroot.
What to Bring
- Sturdy hiking shoes — the trail surface is uneven with exposed roots and rocks
- Water — no water fountains in the preserve
- Layers — ravine temperatures can be 10–15°F cooler than the rim
- Printed map or screenshots — no cell service for GPS
- Bug spray — ticks are active March through November
- Leave the dog at the cabin — no pets allowed, period
Parking
A small gravel parking lot serves the trailhead. No fee. The lot accommodates roughly 15–20 vehicles. On peak fall weekends, arrive before 9 AM to guarantee a spot. All vehicles must exit by dark.
Facilities
The preserve has no restrooms, no water, no visitor center, and no trash cans. The nearest restrooms are at Rock House or Old Man's Cave. Pack out all trash.
Accessibility
The trails are not wheelchair accessible. The terrain is natural-surface with moderate elevation changes. For an accessible alternative, Ash Cave (15 minutes south) offers a fully paved 0.25-mile gorge trail reaching Ohio's largest recess cave. Details at HockingHikes.com.
